(Charles Lloyd) “Fabia Mantwill’s music encompasses the beauty of our world in a way rarely captured by contemporary musicians. Organic. Creative. Powerful. And Nurturing. Her playing, writing and spirit are cut from the same cloth. Honest, direct and soulful.“ (Greg Cohen) |
BIO
AWARDEE of the GERMAN JAZZ PRIZE 2021
for "Arrangement of the Year" FABIA MANTWILL is a Berlin-based saxophonist, vocalist, composer and arranger with an international focus. She has been gaining increasing recognition as an important young German contemporary composer and musician with her own message.
On the 'breathtaking, epic debut album' (New York Music Daily) entitled EM.PERIENCE she features her 24-piece signature chamber orchestra - the Fabia Mantwill Orchestra - and world renowned guest soloists Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ben Wendel and Nils Landgren. The variety of voices, sounds, harmonies and instruments made the record emerge in its brilliant holistic nature. In June 2021 Fabia Mantwill was awarded with the German Jazz Prize for her arrangement of Ophelia, which is the opening track of the album. As an arranger and composer, Fabia Mantwill has worked with Vince Mendoza, Kurt Elling, Becca Stevens, the Metropole Orchestra (NL), the National Scottish Jazz Orchestra and the Equilibrium Orchestra in Minsk, to name a few. In November 2018 her orchestra work, Sasa ndio Sasa, was premiered at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, where she was featured as a composer, conductor and soloist. She received an invitation to the prestigious Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead Residency (2016) and the Banff International Workshop for Jazz & Creative Music (2017). Musical highlights include concerts at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and the Apollo Theater in New York City, as well as festivals (e.g. Elbjazz, Jazz Baltica) and tours in China, India, Brazil, West Africa, Canada, USA and Europe. Fabia Mantwill holds a Master of Music & Composition from the HfMT Hamburg, a Bachelor in Jazz from the Jazz-Institute Berlin and was a guest student at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki in 2015. |
